A china display cabinet was right below the plate shelf (you might recall it from last week). I happen to have a similar display cabinet in my home but mine is filled with artifacts and treasures (such as three vials of Hawaiian sand — one white, one black, and one green).
In the kitchen was a Christmas elf guarding the cookies and candies which did appear to be offered to visitors. However, the fake spilled milk convinced me that the elf was saying "Look but don't touch the goodies".
The kitchen sink looks much different than one finds on HGTV or in our modern homes but I'll bet it was every bit as functional to whomever was preparing the next meal.
Here we see a kitchen cabinet — different in design but every bit as functional as the ones in my kitchen. The only mystery is the purpose of the metal box on the left. My guess is that it is a flour mill for holding then milling (grinding?) course flour, making it soft and fine for baking those Christmas cookies, etc.
Next up is a vintage refrigerator, only a slight improvement over the previous, commonly used, ice box. I am old enough to recall my family having an ice box when I was very young — with an ice man delivering a big block of ice periodically to provide the chilling for the contents.
This is an antique gas stove with an oven and, what I think are storage drawers for pots and pans. By the way, you can search online and find similar stoves for sale. Many of them indicate that they are still in working order. Hmmm, interesting.
In the hallway leading to the stairs, one finds a small table with a lamp and a few sprigs of holiday greenery. Lovely.
Going up the stairs we found another stained glass window — this one with exterior light brightening the colors of the stained glass. I love it!
Upstairs, we see a child's room complete with toys, books, and photos. And that looks like a chamber pot under the window with an elf looking out.
On the floor of the same bedroom was a bobcat skin with an elf sitting on its nose. I would have thought a bobcat skin might frighten a child who occupied this room. Maybe not. I'd love to know the rest of the story.
This is the desk in the child's room. Would you believe that this child had his or her own two-piece telephone? Lucky kid! Nice elves too.
To be continued... |
Life is good. |
