Maui Surprises |
I have been coming to Hawai’i for probably 45 years and this paradise still holds surprises. Today was my first full day on Maui and we had rain. That was not a surprise but the lightning and thunder were. I have never seen lightning nor heard thunder in all these years of visiting and my one year living on Maui. I tried to time my morning walk when the rain appeared to have let up only to have it start to pour as I got to the farthest point and I started back to the condo. Drenched I was when I got home. Fortunately, it was a warm rain. And I counted a total of 30 or so bursts of thunder, most within two miles of me as I walked.
Tonight I strolled down to the lower pool here at Napili Shores where I often enjoy the early evening breeze. Not much breeze tonight but a spectacular sunset. The first photo shows the lighting of the sky beyond Moloka’i. It looks like a forest fire on the far side — or maybe a volcanic eruption.

The second photo is of the ocean between Lana’i and Moloka’i. I was in awe of what I was seeing. There was no time to run back to my unit and get my Nikon D850 and the tripod so I settled for capturing the scene with my iPhone camera. Not too bad I’d say.
