Maui: County Fair, Part 2 |
As longtime readers of LAHP know, my favorite attraction at the Fair is the Orchid Show.
The beauty and variety of orchids is splendid.
However, I have noticed a disturbing (to me) trend in recent years.
It seems like fewer growers are participating — both amateur and professional.
With the result that the total display area has slowly reduced over the years.
Fortunately, the remaining participants are producing a mesmerizing array of varieties to please the casual fan as well as the dedicated aficionado.
Since the orchids are displayed in the same gym as the 4H produce, quilts, art and photography exhibits, I also noted the same trend in those areas.
In fact, I recall that they used to have competition for best tropical jelly, jam and preserves. I always wanted to help judge that competition — but it seems to have gone the way of the dodo bird.
One thing has not changed...
...and that is the Orchid Club's huge booth where they sell orchids at very reasonable prices.
In fact, many times in years past I would purchase a nice Phalaenopsis, enjoy it for my time on Maui then give it as a gift to the maid who serviced our condo. Yes, the flowers last that long.
Even with a smaller show, some of the participants are still providing most unusual but attractive orchid displays. Love it!

To be continued...
Life is good.
