My absolute favorite attraction of the Maui County Fair is the Orchid Exhibit. The varied climate on Maui, depending on elevation, allows countless varieties of orchids to be grown without the need for controlled-climate greenhouses — they just grow outdoors. Thus numerous commercial growers and hobbyists alike contribute their creations to the show. Competition for prizes is friendly but fierce.

Additionally, the Maui Orchid Society has many varieties of orchids on sale at very reasonable prices. On many occasions, I have made such a purchase to beautify my condo during my stay. The blossoms are exotic, long-lasting and, depending on the orchid, fragrant — adding so much enjoyment to my time in paradise. Then when it is time to depart for the mainland, I give the orchid to the maid who serviced my room or to the Front Desk when they have been especially nice or particularly helpful.
