Petroglyph 2

The ancient Hawai`ians carved figures into rocks — as did the peoples of many cultures. One of the nicest collections of petroglyphs is found at the Puakō Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve just north of the Mauna Lani Resort. The rocks containing the petroglyphs are along the trail — easy to spot.

If you go to Puakō to see them in person, please remember that they are an historic treasure — do not walk on them, touch them or even attempt to take a rubbing. It is against the law to deface, mark or scratch the petroglyphs — but more importantly Madame Pele, the goddess of the volcano, will place a curse on you which will follow you home and for the rest of your life.
