Punalu`u Beach

Punalu`u Beach is a breathtaking black sand beach on the south shore of the Big Island. The sand is created by Mother Nature grinding up lava rocks to smaller and smaller bits — then depositing them along the shoreline to form the beach. The white bits are pieces of coral and rock.

Green Sea Turtles often come ashore here to rest after feeding on the seaweed clinging to the offshore lava rock. They are a protected species and the state has posted signs asking the visitor to keep a respectful distance from them. Now if you look closely you can see a turtle on the beach just above the waves. At this resolution it is hard to tell what it is but the resolution of the prints is perfectly adequate to see it. And if you would like to see a turtle up close, just click here.
